Law Firm Creates Fund to Help Send Severely Burned Children to Unique Camp

MILFORD — The law firm of Koskoff, Koskoff & Bieder has donated $10,000 to help pay travel expenses for badly burned youngsters going to the Arthur C. Luf Children’s Burn Camp.

The funds will create the Koskoff Travel Fund for the Arthur C. Luf Children’s Burn Camp (Union, Conn.), operated by the Connecticut Burns Care Foundation, Milford.
Atty. Neal DeYoung, a member of Koskoff, became involved with the Burn Camp after his son attended the Camp for two summers.
“I immediately recognized that this Burn Camp is a special place, run by people who are not only dedicated fire and burn care professionals, but who are emotionally drawn to helping young burn victims,” DeYoung said.
Koskoff’s donation will create a fund to help defray the transportation cost for needy children planning to attend a week’s activities at the summer Burn Camp, a camp that is free to the children.
Frank Szivos, executive director of the Connecticut Burns Care Foundation (CBCF), said, “Koskoff’s generous donation fills an important need in helping more children with burn injuries experience the camp.”
“The donation fills an important gap for us,” Szivos said. “We now will have a fund to help children, who can’t afford it, to travel back and forth to our Burn Camp. It’s our mission to have every child with burn injuries who wants to come to be able to take advantage of this special opportunity. The Koskoff Travel Fund will make it considerably easier for children and their parents who already are facing a number of challenges.”
About 70 children from throughout the Northeast and from outside the United States are expected to enjoy camping, sports and a variety of other games at Burn Camp located in Union, Conn., this year from July 13 through the July 20. The children, all burn survivors between age 8 and 18, will have a complete camping experience to help them heal emotionally and physically.
CBCF, based in Milford and celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2008, is dedicated to raising awareness of burn safety and prevention.
The Burn Camp began in 1991 and is staffed by all volunteers – many are retired and active firefighters as well as burn care nurses, physical and occupational therapists and other medical staff. For the first time, the camp will have a burned Iraq War veteran as a counselor.
During the camp, the young people will participate in water sports, games, a ropes course, archery, hiking, and fishing on the wooded 177-acre facility. The Burn Camp is the start of a journey of self-healing for many recent burn survivors — more than 90 percent of the children return annually until high school graduation.
