$17 million settlement against the State of Connecticut

January 1, 2001

For over a decade the State Police had a secret policy to record all telephone calls in and out of every State Police Barracks in the state. When this policy was discovered a class action lawsuit was filed on behalf of hundreds of victims of this illegal wiretapping, including rank and file State Police officers who where also unaware of management’s taping program. The State defended the case vigorously, including budgeting $1.25 million per year for outside counsel all the way from San Francisco to defend this case. After extensive discovery and the defeat of every legal obstacle the State could muster, a settlement was reached on behalf of the class for $17 million.
