BRIDGEPORT – The city plans to conduct an entry-level firefighter examination this summer.

For the first time in the city’s history, the examination process will require all applicants to obtain a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test certification, dated June 1, 2010 or later, issued by the State of Connecticut Fire Academy.

The deadline for registering for the spring 2011 CPAT program is Feb. 25.

The law firm of Koskoff Koskoff & Bieder PC will offer scholarships to help with the cost of the $150 CPAT examination fee for Bridgeport residents who have demonstrated a commitment to their community.

Those interested can apply for a scholarship at www.koskoff.com.

Forty-one paid professional fire departments in the state already have this requirement, including the Stratford, Milford and Stamford fire departments.

Once candidates pass the CPAT, an additional fee of $135 for non-residents and $35 for Bridgeport residents will be required to take the written examination in May. For individuals that pass the written test, an oral test, psychological evaluations, and background investigations will follow.

CPAT information is available from the Commission on Fire Prevention and Control found at: www.ct.gov/cfpc. Information about the city’s application process can be found on the City of Bridgeport website at www.bridgeportct.gov by clicking on the link to the Civil Service Department.
