Avastin

02/16/2011 — Switzerland-based pharmaceutical giant, Roche, was dealt a major blow recently when the U. S. Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended revoking approval of its drug, Avastin. Avastin is the world’s best-selling cancer drug, with sales of about $6 Billion in 2009, and is prescribed to approximately 17,500 women with breast cancer per year.

The drug has now been linked to devastating side effects such as holes in the stomach or intestines (gastrointestinal perforation); kidney damage; changes in vision or neurological damage; impaired wound healing; heart failure; and severe bleeding resulting in stroke or death.
