Griffin Hospital officials announced on Friday that more than 3,000 hospitalized patients may have been exposed to a blood-borne disease due to misuse of insulin injection devices.

Patients who received treatment via these devices, known as FlexPens, from September, 2008 through last week are being notified by the hospital by first class and certified mail. Though the hospital believes the likelihood of infection to be small, patients can be tested for HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

The FlexPen devices contain a cartridge with multiple doses of insulin. They are intended for use on one patient but in some cases were used on multiple patients.
