Retinopathy of prematurity, also known as ROP, is a potentially devastating disease that can affect a premature infant. Sometimes when a baby is born prematurely, there is a disruption in the normal development of the blood vessels in the eye.

Without careful monitoring for the development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), the condition can develop and, if left untreated, can cause scar tissue to form, the retina to be damaged, and can even result in blindness. The standard of care requires that premature babies be evaluated for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and if required, surgery be quickly undertaken to prevent the ROP from causing blindness.
